Alice May Woods

May 9, 1923 ~ July 24, 2019

Alice May Woods

It is with profound sadness that the family announces the peaceful passing of Alice May Woods at the age of 96.  Alice was predeceased by her son Allan Woods of Salmon Arm, BC and daughter Linda Thomas of High Level, Alberta.

She is survived by her son Barry Woods of Ashcroft, BC; daughter Phyllis Copeland (Patrick) of Whitehorse, YT; daughter-in-law Sylvia Woods; grandson Cory Woods (Nykol) and her three great-grandsons (Talis, Kieryn, Mason); granddaughter Kristie Camstra (Mike) all of Salmon Arm, BC; and grandson Tim Woods of 100 Mile House, BC.

Alice was born in Unity, Saskatchewan.  The eldest of five children, she grew up during the depression.  She joined the Canadian Air Force during World War II and was stationed in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, where she worked as an Administrative Assistant and clocked the training flights.  She took a trip to Ottawa and had the opportunity to see Roosevelt and Churchill and took another trip with some gal pals to New York City.

She met her then husband while in the Service and they moved to Surrey, BC in 1948.  Alice raised four children alone.  She worked for a time as a waitress and then gained employment at the Surrey Memorial Hospital delivering meal trays to patients and working in the kitchen.

A serious fall at work changed her life and she retired in the early 80s. She was addicted to crocheting and loved to play crib.  She moved to various locations around BC, moved back to Unity, Saskatchewan for a time, and eventually ended up living with her daughter and son-in-law in Whitehorse.  After another tragic fall, she ended up in the Thomson Centre.

Thank you to all the loving and caring staff at the Thomson Centre for all your kind ministrations to my mother.
As per Alice’s wishes, there will not be a funeral.  A short service will be held at the Thomson Centre, Wednesday, August 7that 2:00 in the Fireside Room.  In lieu of flowers, please feel free to make a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
