Elsie Joan Westervelt (née: Sumanik)July 7, 1938 ~ July 2, 2018
Elsie Westervelt of Whitehorse, Yukon, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2018 at the age of 79, after several years battling cancer. She is survived by her loving sons, Don (Loretta) and Ron (Inge); grandchildren, DJ, Stacey (Adam), Kayne, Caitlyn and Spencer and great grandchildren, Samson and Denali. Elsie is predeceased by her husbands, Don and Myrle; her father, Harry, mother, Mary and siblings Dick and Toodie.
Elsie was a Nursing Aide early in her adult life, and in her later years she was an active Mary Kay Beauty Consultant.
Elsie was dedicated to personal fitness throughout her life. Her dedicated commitment culminated in winning several medals in the World Masters Cross Country Ski Championships at Lake Placid, New York. During her later years, she threw herself into workouts with her personal fitness trainer at the gym and finally with the Aquafit Ladies at the Canada Game Centre. She had a passion for dance and founded the Sourdough Stompers Square Dance Club with her husband Don.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Karen’s Room at the Whitehorse General Hospital or a cancer charity of your choosing.
The family wishes to express its sincere gratitude for the excellent and compassionate care she received from the home support team at Health and Social Services, Dr. Simmons at the B.C. Cancer Agency; Dr. Freeman; and with special mention for exemplary service to Elsie and family by Dr. Sally MacDonald. Sally is deserving of an Order of Yukon and Order of Canada for her service during Elsie’s battle.
A Celebration of life for Elsie will be in the Grey Mountain Room at the Mt. McIntyre Recreation Center on Sunday, September 9 from 1 pm to 3 pm. Doors will open for seating at 12:45
