Gisela DaenenMarch 29, 1934 - June 25, 2016
It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of Gisela Daenen at the Whitehorse General Hospital on June 25, 2016, at the age of 82 Gisela left us after a,short but courageous battle with ALS.
Gisela was born on March 29, 1934 outside of Düsseldorf, Germany. At the age of 22, Gisela began her adventure with travelling and immigrated to Holland. While in Holland, Gisela worked as a nanny for the Veltman family. Her years with this loving family were cherished memories for Gisela, and she remained close with all of the Veltman children until the day she passed away. To the end, the grown children affectionately referred to Gisela as “Lieve Gila”. In 1966 Gisela married and soon became a mother to her own children, first Christine and then Guillaume (Bill). After a short 2 year stay in Australia, the family returned to Holland for 4 more years and then immigrated to the Yukon. Although not born and raised in the Yukon, Gisela was a true Yukoner at heart and loved spending the next 40 years in the territory. Gisela made many friends in the Yukon, with none more dear than Al and Anita Sheardown. During her time in the Yukon, Gisela worked primarily as a child care worker and spent many years at the Yukon College Daycare. She started her child care career at the age of 22 and finally retired at 81 years young. Gisela remained an avid traveller throughout her life and travelled to Switzerland, England, South American and throughout the US and Canada.
Gisela is survived by her daughter Christine (Dave) Daenen-Hume and her son Guillaume (Michelle) Daenen. She was predeceased by her parents and her beloved dogs, Sheba and Tara-Belle. The family would like to send a very special thank you to Dr. Alex Kmet and the nursing staff at the Whitehorse General Hospital for making Gisela’s final days comfortable and dignified. A special thank you also goes out to Sister Edith, Sister Karen and Lynn Rice-Rideout for giving comfort to both Gisela and her family during this very difficult time. At Gisela’s request, there will be not be a formal funeral service. A celebration of Gisela’s life will be held in late July, with details to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers those who wish may make memorial donations to the ALS Society of BC, 1233 – 13351 Commerce Parkway, Richmond, BC V6V 2X7
