Leonard Joseph Rice

March 26, 1946 ~ March 23, 2026

Leonard Joseph Rice

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Leonard Joseph Rice announces his passing at the Whitehorse General Hospital on March 23, 2026, shortly before his 80th birthday.

Born in Bear Cove, Newfoundland, to Maud Abbott, Leonard carried the industrious and generous spirit of the “Rock” throughout his life. A man of remarkable skill and work ethic, he dedicated his career to the Baie Verte Advocate Mines as a Heavy Duty Equipment Operator and instructor. He didn’t just move the earth; he shared his expertise with others.

After living in Baie Verte, Leonard moved to the Yukon 23 years ago, where he quickly became an integral part of the community. His life was defined by service to others and a deep love for the outdoors. He was never happier than when he was out on a moose hunt or in the kitchen, saying, “I can cook a good feed!”

Whether it was his years as a volunteer with the Baie Verte Fire Department, where he was known for cooking for his fellow firefighters, or his more recent dedication to Paddlers Abreast, Leonard was a constant, reliable presence. He never missed a practice and was always there to support the team in Carmacks and Dawson greeting everyone with his big smile and warm hugs while keeping them well-fed and spirited.

Above all else, Leonard’s greatest joy was his family. He was the husband of Pansy, and a proud and loving father to his daughters, Lorna Tucker (Wayne) and Lynn Rice-Rideout (Vic). His heart belonged truly to his grandchildren, Kirk Tucker (Sarah) and Kristian Rideout (Dominique), and his forever furry friend Milo, in whom his legacy of kindness, humour, and strength will live on.

Leonard was predeceased by his mother, Maud Abbott; bothers Donald and Chesley; sisters Ethel and Ellen. He leaves behind a wide circle of friends from both the East Coast and the North who will forever miss his guidance, his cooking, and his big heart.

A big thank you to all of the staff on the medical unit at the Whitehorse General Hospital. A special thank you to Dr. Petrovich for his kindness and compassion while dad was under his care.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Paddlers Abreast or the B.C. Children’s Hospital.
