John-Eric Petersson

August 5, 1966 – October 14, 2026

John-Eric Petersson

It is with deep sadness, but also profound gratitude, that we announce the passing of John-Eric Petersson in October 2026, at the age of 60, following a courageous battle with appendix cancer.

Born in 1966, in Wetaskiwin, Alberta, John-Eric was the son of Stig and the late Marion Petersson, and brother to Ellen and Anna.

John-Eric’s life was marked by his unwavering faith in Jesus Christ, his devotion to family, his genuine love for people, and his enthusiasm for the great outdoors — especially when there was a motorized vehicle involved in exploring it. He was a man of integrity, kindness, and quiet strength whose faith was not simply something he professed, but something he demonstrated through his actions and relationships.

After attending NAIT, John-Eric made his way north, building a life and career in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and later Whitehorse, Yukon. The North became much more than a place to live. It was where he built lasting friendships, embraced adventure, and established a home, family, and community that meant so much to him.

In Yellowknife, John-Eric met Joanne, the woman who would become his wife and partner in life’s many adventures. They married in 1997, and together welcomed their two sons, Torsten and Anders. His family was central to his life, and he took great joy in being a husband and father.

Those who knew John-Eric will remember his infectious laughter, thoughtful nature, curiosity, genuine interest in others, and love of the outdoors. He was intentional in his relationships, generous with his time, and someone who could turn an ordinary moment into a lasting memory. His calm presence, steadfast loyalty, and willingness to help others left a meaningful impression on family, friends, colleagues, and the many people whose paths crossed his.

The final years of John-Eric’s life brought challenges no one could have anticipated. Diagnosed with appendix cancer in early 2024, he faced his own difficult journey while also walking alongside Joanne through her battle with cancer. In May 2026, he experienced the loss of his mother, Marion, followed by the heartbreaking passing of his wife, Joanne, in July 2026.

Through tremendous loss and personal suffering, John-Eric’s faith remained foundational to who he was. His life reflected a deep trust in God and a belief that the hope found in Christ extends beyond the circumstances of this life.

While we grieve his passing, we are grateful for the years we shared, the laughter and adventures, the wisdom and encouragement, and the example of a life lived with purpose, joy, faith, and love.

John-Eric’s legacy lives on in his sons, his family, the friendships he nurtured, and the countless lives he touched.
