We own and operate our own crematorium located in Porter Creek.
We offer a variety of cremation options, from a very basic cremation, to a witnessed cremation (where family is present before or at the time of cremation), to having a traditional funeral followed by cremation. Every service is unique and can be personalized to honour the person who died.
Cremation FAQ’S
How long do we have to wait until a loved one can be cremated?
We must wait 48 hours from the time of death until a cremation can be performed. This ensures that we can register the decedent’s death with the territorial government, complete and sign all our legal documents, and receive the coroner’s approval. Sometimes a legal will is required to confirm the decedent’s wishes.
How long is the cremation process?
Depending on the decedent’s weight and type of cremation casket chosen, the cremation itself can take anywhere from 2 – 4.5 hours. When the cremation is complete, the cremation chamber must cool down before sweeping out the decedent’s cremated remains. Once the cremated remains are cooled, the bone fragments are pulverized into unrecognizable bone fragments, or “ashes”. These cremated remains, or “ashes”, are then placed into the chosen urn/vessel.
Why do I need a casket for cremation?
It is mandatory to have a combustible and rigid container/casket for the cremation process for:
- health & safety reasons (i.e., contain any bodily fluids, minimize odours)
- confidentiality of the decedent
- transfer and placement of the decedent into the cremation chamber.
It is the decision makers choice whether they would like to purchase a very simple cremation casket or choose a more traditional style casket for the cremation process. You can also provide your own cremation casket. Please contact us to receive information on the specific requirements.
