Helen Craig Hermanson

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Helen Craig Hermanson, a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, friend, and community member. Born on August 21, 1927, in Ayr, Scotland, Helen lived a life full of adventure, accomplishment, and love.

Helen married her first husband, Jack Tuton, with whom she welcomed four sons: Craig, Ian, David, and Gordon. In 1951, seeking new opportunities and a brighter future, Helen and Jack immigrated to Canada, embarking on a long journey to Whitehorse, Yukon, in February of that year. These early years in their new home were marked by determination and the building of a legacy that would leave a lasting imprint on the community.

In 1969, Helen remarried, finding love and companionship with Helmer Hermanson. Helmer brought three wonderful daughters into the family: Patty, Jane, and Susan. Together, Helen and Helmer shared a deep bond and a love of travel that enriched their lives and created countless cherished memories.

Helen’s determination and drive were evident in every step she took. As she and her family settled into the rugged beauty of Whitehorse, she embraced the challenges of a new life with unwavering resilience. Her ability to adapt and thrive in the face of adversity became a defining trait, earning her the admiration of those who knew her. Whether managing a young household or contributing to her growing community, Helen’s boundless energy and optimism left a profound mark on everyone she encountered.

Together, Helen and Helmer explored the world, traveling to places like Fiji, Scotland, Europe, and spending winters in Arizona. Summers at Tagish and Marsh Lake became a treasured sanctuary for their family, filled with love, laughter, and natural beauty.

Helen’s entrepreneurial spirit was an inspiration to many. She owned and operated several ladies’ fashion stores, bringing style and a touch of elegance to the community she loved. Beyond her business ventures, Helen passionately dedicated herself to teaching Scottish Highland dancing and figure skating in her younger years, sharing her cultural heritage and artistic talents with others.

Her vibrant personality also shone through in her involvement with the local choral society and drama club. Helen’s dedication to music and theatre brought joy to those around her and enriched the cultural fabric of her community.

Above all, Helen was a devoted mother to her four sons and three daughters, a proud grandmother to 15 grandchildren, and a loving great-grandmother to four great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her second son, Ian, whose memory she held dear throughout her life. Helen’s family was her greatest treasure, and the legacy of love she built with them will continue to live on.

Helen Craig Hermanson was a woman of grace, strength, and unyielding passion for life. She leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and community that will be remembered fondly by all who knew her.

Helen Craig Hermanson passed away peacefully on June 19th, 2025, after a life well-lived. In her final days, she was a patient at Whistlebend Place in Wind River Lodge, where she received compassionate care. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff who graciously attended to her every need and to Drs. Buchanan and Bell for their dedicated attention and kindness.

Dear Family, I only knew Helen briefly, but she left a lasting impression on both my husband Seann and I. In 2011, we purchased their house on Northstar Drive when they downsized to a condo. I will never forget her loving and vibrant personality. Congratulations Helen for a life well lived.

My Auntie Helen and her family are the reason we came to Whitehorse in 1966. We have been here in the Yukon ever since. My mother Jean and her sister Helen were best friends, and worked together for many years. Aunt Helen was an amazing woman and will be missed by many. Love to you Aunt Helen !

So much more could be said about Helen, and that feisty, accomplished business acumen that served her well over the years. Always placing the priorities of family first, and then business in measured terms. I first met Helen and Helmer in Whitehorse, Yukon. As a young banker in the late 70’s, Helen providing the directional “guidance” on what good service should be, and would certainly remind us on those days when we needed to be reminded 🙂 This association grew, and ultimately so did our friendship. I met her extended family and of course Patty and John who became wonderful dear friends over many decades later.

Helen and Helmer represented a well grounded family; they are Mr. and Mrs. Yukon having given so much back to this northern community. We will miss her but will certainly remember her. Our deepest condolences to all her direct and extended family members. Rest well Helen, a long life, well lived. Gary Leskun and family.
