Herbert C Arnold

September 22, 1946 ~ September 02, 2025

It is with a very sad heart that I announce the passing of Herbert.

He was born to a very loving family in Chur, Switzerland and grew up along with his 9 siblings in the Swiss mountains. He started his work career with interior decorating and design. Not too happy, he soon started the training to be a police officer. He learned quickly that patrolling the highways was not what he liked and trained to be a CSI. After 25 years, he quit his service with the police force and became the security manager at the largest Swiss Bank. He learned so much there and found friends for life. However, his workplace was in the Centre of Zurich which was not his world. Nature was his happy place and wildlife photography was his beloved hobby, so it was no surprise that, 37 years ago, after spending 3 months in northern BC and Yukon, he fell in love with the north.

Consequently, in 1997 he made Whitehorse his new home, bought the “Sourdough Country” campsite with his partner which they renamed ”Caribou RV Park” soon after. He settled for a way less hectic lifestyle and spent a lot of time in Kluane Country with his cameras.

His travels brought him to Churchill, Manitoba 5 times to see the Polar Bears and Belugas, and as far North as Bathurst Island to see the musk oxen, Sommerset Island and many more amazing places.

He retired from the campground in 2006, and still had years left to enjoy life until Parkinson’s disease caught up with him. He spent his last 3 years at Whistle Bend Place where he was taken care of with love and compassion and eventually passed away very peacefully.

I want to mention the staff of House 4, Kusawa House. Your kindness, patience and love are amazing and very much appreciated. Thank you!

Herbert will be missed by friends and his partner of 35 years.
