Ian Maissan

Ian Maissan

Ian Maissan was born in Manitouwadge, northern Ontario, on December 27, 1982, younger brother to Carl. He was a happy, clever, outgoing child until a tragic near-drowning accident when he was almost three years old changed his life and his family’s. Ian fought hard for his life and for what recovery from the brain injury was possible.

The loving attention of Big Brother Carl was a huge part of his childhood. Devoted kind volunteers helped with a home rehabilitation program and quickly became close family friends that remained over many years, even decades.

He enjoyed some great teachers and wonderful friends. The attentions of the family dogs Fergie and later Minnie were another pleasure. He always really enjoyed music of all kinds.

Parents John and Sheila took loving care of him at home until he was approaching 18 when he moved into permanent long-term care. Ian was blessed with good care and some exceptional staff over the years, first at Thomson Centre then at Copper Ridge Place while his parents continued to advocate for his needs.

He died from a sudden severe illness on October 17, 2025, with John and Sheila beside him.

In his almost forty years of disability Ian showed great strength and courage, patience and determination. His was not an easy life, but he found more kind friends than we can list to ease his way. Bless you all.

There will be a memorial service at 2 pm on Saturday November 1, 2025 at Whitehorse United Church, 6th and Main, reception to follow.
