Jean Smeeton

March 3, 1934 ~ October 6, 2025

Jean Smeeton

Our loving mother, grandmother, great‑grandmother, and great‑great‑grandmother, Jean Smeeton, slipped from this world on October 6th, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on March 3rd, 1934, in New Westminster, British Columbia, Jean’s life carried her northward in the early 1950s, when she and her husband Roy set out for the Yukon and Dawson City with their first son, Kirk, in tow. Jean loved talking about those early years in the North: the challenges, the adventures, and the way that life was then in that place.

Jean and the family first made their home in Granville, and later Bear Creek, outside Dawson City, where Roy worked on the gold dredges and Jean tended to the busy rhythm of family life. Two more children, Barb and Chris, were welcomed there before the family eventually moved to Whitehorse in 1966 when Roy got on with White Pass. The family settled in Crestview, where their fourth child, Anthony was welcomed, completing the family circle.

Jean’s heart lived in the company of those she loved. She will be remembered for her quiet strength, her sharp wit, her delight in puzzles, her laugh, and the generosity that seemed to flow from her as naturally as breath. Her devotion to her family was unwavering. She was a constant, steady light. She was the family’s North star.

Jean is predeceased by her beloved husband Roy (1983), whom she is with again. She leaves behind her sister Dodie of Whidbey Island, Washington State, her sons Kirk, Chris, and Tony of Whitehorse; her daughter Barb of Calgary; her grandchildren Warren, Marie, Jonathan, Michael, Matthew, Scott, Kelsey, Kayden, and Riley; as well as many great‑grandchildren and a great‑great‑grandson who carry her memory and her story forward.

Jean passed away after a brief stay at Copper Ridge Place in Whitehorse. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at both Whitehorse General Hospital and Copper Ridge Place for the care and kindness they offered her. A memorial service is planned for summer 2026, when her family will gather in Whitehorse to honour her life in the place she called home for so long.

Jean was a pleasure to spend time with. Many of us Home Support Workers had the privilege of listening to her stories of the past and marveled at her unwavering strength. She is missed.

So sorry for your loss. Although it has been many years since I had seen Aunt Jean, she held a very special place in my mother’s life.
