Arthur (Art) Oscar Haberer
Art passed away peacefully on December 23, 2017 at the Whitehorse Hospital with his wife Norma by his side. Art is survived by Norma (Kall) his wife of 49 years; four sisters: Margaret (Arthur), Pauline (Charlie), Alice, Joyce (Edwin); several nieces and nephews and lifelong friend, cousin Glen (Sue) of Calgary.
He was born in Standard, Alberta on September 10, 1943 to Oscar Haberer and Magdelina Schaffer and raised on his parent’s farm and later attended Calgary Business College.
Art met Norma in 1966 and they were married in June 1968 in High River, Alberta. After a holiday trip to the Yukon in 1976 they were so impressed that they moved to Whitehorse, Yukon Territory in 1977.
He worked first at Beaver Lumber and then for Hougens in Shipping and Receiving. His last employment was with Whitehorse Housing Authority as Maintenance Supervisor, retiring in 2004. Art’s goal in the Yukon was to build a cabin and most of his time was spent there especially after retirement. His cabin was his home. He loved fishing on the lake as well as tending to his huge vegetable garden. Art and Norma both enjoyed hunting for moose and bison, skiing, and fishing trips to Alaska. Many evenings were spent around campfires with friends and beloved dogs.
Those who knew Art appreciated his can-do work attitude, his patient, kind, gentle and laid-back nature. His sly, dry sense of humour came easily, brightening many a conversation with friends and family. Art loved the Yukon and lived life on his own terms. He will be greatly missed.
At Art’s request there will be no funeral service and cremation has taken place.
