Elsie Florence Wilke

Elsie Florence Wilke (née Robertshaw) age 90, went valiantly into death on Sunday October 2, 2022, at Whistle Bend Place, Whitehorse, Yukon.

Born April 5, 1932, in Weston, Ontario to Emily Cousineau and Herman Robertshaw, Elsie was one of twelve children and is predeceased by all her siblings (Tom, Emily, Ernie, Lottie, Olive, Irene, Dorothy, Sam, Herman, Bob, Stella), her parents, her husband Otto “Jim” Wilke (2006) and Baby Elizabeth (1951). She is survived by her sister-in-law Kay Robertshaw(Bob).

Elsie married Jim in 1950 and together they raised six children, Elizabeth (died in 1951), William (Sherri), Michael (Cathy), Raymond (Louise), Stephen (Graeme), and Karen. She also has twelve grandchildren, Christopher, Halina, Heather, Stephanie, Jonathan, Heather Lynn, Lisa, Sarah, Emily, Kimberley, Catherine, and Scott. In addition, there are plenty of great-grandchildren.

Elsie worked as a mother and Red Cross homemaker. Initially, Elsie worked at Continental Can, where she met Jim, and Woolworths. After finishing the secretarial program, she worked as a secretary at Korry Coffee and St. Angus Church. Elsie was an active volunteer for Boy Scouts Canada as a cub master for over 10 years. She was involved with Girl Guides of Canada for approximately 15 years as a Brownie Owl, Girl Guide leader, District Commissioner and Cookie Convener and later became involved in the Trefoil guild. Elsie  volunteered through the Anglican church including Primates World Relief, Grandmother to Grandmother program, Samaritan’s Purse shoebox program, and North Hastings representative to ACW Synod, member of ACW sympathy teas and many church bake sales and bazaars.

Elsie enjoyed baking up a storm for events and family, quilting, knitting, reading, and visits with friends and family. During retirement she traveled to see family including visits to Northern Ontario, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Alberta, Saskatchewan and more recently the Yukon.

Elsie will be sadly missed by her family, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and many friends who had the pleasure to enjoy her baked goods and homemade quilts and blankets.

A special thank you to Doctor Phillips, Doctor Kent, Doctor Percel, and Doctor Bell for their supportive care during the years.

Donations may be made to the Red Cross, St. John Ambulance therapy program, Alzheimer’s Society of Canada, or a charity of your choice in memory of Elsie.

Interment will take place at St. Thomas Anglican Cemetery in Bracebridge, Ontario, on October 21, 2022, at 1pm.

A Life Celebration will be held at Ridley’s funeral home in Toronto, Ontario, on Sunday October 23, 2022, at 1pm.
