Leonard “Lenny” McQuaid
Leonard McQuaid, known to all as Lenny, was an easygoing, fun-loving man with a remarkable
sense of humor and an undeniable zest for life. He was well liked, respected, and loved by all who
knew him. Lenny made friends effortlessly and was always ready to lend a helping hand. His
generosity, kindness, and ability to accept others as they were will be remembered with fondness by all who crossed his path.
Lenny was born in Montague, Prince Edward Island, the eldest child of Elmer and Henrietta
McQuaid. Raised in the community of St. Teresa, he grew up with a deep sense of family and
community.
In his late teens, Lenny left PEI in search of work, and his journey took him into the United
States. After receiving an invitation from the US government to join the military (or face
conscription), Lenny enlisted in the US Navy, serving from 1964 to 1968. His travels took him to
many parts of the world, and the Mediterranean region remained especially dear to him.
Following his military service, Lenny returned to Canada, making his way across the country to
Edmonton, Calgary, and finally the Yukon, where he would make his home.
Over the years, Lenny worked as a truck driver and equipment operator, often in remote northern
locations. But Lenny was more than just a hardworking man—he was a man of adventure.
In 1985, Lenny discovered skydiving, and it became a passion he pursued with excitement and
dedication. He completed over 300 jumps, in locations across Alberta, BC, the Yukon, and
California. He also held a pilot’s license, enjoying the thrill of flying as much as the thrill of
jumping from an airplane.
Though Lenny was a confirmed bachelor for much of his life, everything changed in 2009 when he
met Shari. The two married in 2010 and made their home in Whitehorse, Yukon. Together they
enjoyed traveling, camping, and visiting Lenny’s beloved PEI.
In 2022, amid the global Covid pandemic, Lenny was diagnosed with cancer and the world was
forever changed. Len fought bravely and with the same determination that marked his entire life.
He passed away peacefully on January 13, 2025, at Whitehorse General Hospital, with his wife,
Shari, and good friend, Claude Pelletier, by his side.
Lenny is predeceased by his parents, Elmer and Henrietta, and his younger brother, Hubert. He
leaves behind his loving wife, Shari, and many cherished relatives and friends across the country.
His spirit, humor, and kindness will be deeply missed, but his memory will live on in the hearts of
all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Rest in peace Len, you are loved and missed by many.
