Mary Jean Gartshore
It is with heartfelt sadness that the Gartshore family advise of Mary Jean Gartshore’s passing, on Monday, June 15, 2020 in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory. Her illness was brief, and she is now having a grand time in Heaven with Dad, Mom, and our eldest sister Patricia.
Mary is survived by her siblings, Brian and Carmen Gartshore, Ian and Anita Gartshore, Anne and Dave Alderman and Nora and Chris Fisher. She also held dear her nieces and nephews, extended sisters-in-law, and many friends that were and are truly family to us.
Mary was her own individual. Her community and home was Dawson, Yukon Territory. She loved living there over the past 30 years, where she developed deep friendships and respected relationships with her colleagues and community members. She was well-loved.
Mary loved her family, including extended family and her friendship circle, and she loved telling stories. She had many adventures, and openly shared her stories, the history of the Yukon, and numerous other topics she was well-versed in. She loved to tell her stories!
Mary loved traveling and recently made a big trip to Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia, where she visited many lifelong friends and made new friends with our extended Gartshore worldwide family. An important goal for Mary was to spend her 60th birthday in Australia revisiting people and places she’d been to in the past, for which she was grateful.
At Mary’s request, cremation will take place. There are no immediate plans for an in-person gathering. However, when possible an event will take place in southwestern Ontario. Memorial donations may be made to the Dawson City Hospital, 501 Sixth Ave, Dawson City, YT Y0B 1G0, with reference: in Mary Gartshore’s memory.

Mary worked on my crew on the Dawson ferry in the 90’s and while I moved away and haven’t seen her for going on 20 years now I still remember the good talks and good times we shared while working together. I’m glad she got to travel some more as I remember how much she enjoyed sharing her travelling and sailing adventure stories with me. I’m deeply saddened to hear of her passing and send my condolences to her family.
