Paul Alexander Mataseje

Paul Alexander Mataseje

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Paul Alexander Mataseje on September 26, 2024.

Paul arrived in the Yukon in the early 70’s from Ontario to join his brothers Tom and Steve, after which he made the Yukon his home. He was an accomplished tradesman and worked in construction, carpentry, and welding although there were not many trades he was unable to do. He was self-taught in many aspects of his work and was always determined to learn more. He enjoyed building and would use any left-over materials to make something useful for friends and family. He built many homes in Whitehorse, the last one being his own home in Marsh Lake where he resided with his life partner Mo (Maureen) Hartigan. Paul loved to take his boat out in the summer or Skidoo out in the winter to fish on Marsh Lake.

Paul’s work ethic could not be topped. He loved to work with his hands and offered his help to anyone in need of it. He was charismatic and had a terrific sense of humour, his laugh was infectious, and he would be the centre of many hilarious stories. He worked until his body could no longer function and he died in hospital with family around him. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Paul is survived by his siblings Rosie, Tom, Helen, Veronica, Steve (Darlene), Joe, and Larry (Gwen). He is also survived by his stepdaughter Kelly, her husband Glenn, and grandchildren Bria and Lennox. He will also be remembered and loved by all his nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his life partner Mo, his mother Anna, and his father John Mataseje.

Thank you to the exceptional and compassionate care that the nurses and doctors gave him in the Surgical Ward at the Whitehorse General Hospital.

I will always remember fishing Marsh Lake with Uncle Paul. Whether Uncle Paul’s head was halfway down the hole in the ice spotting trout or whether he was tying some giant ugly spoon to cast for northerns from a 12 ft tinner, he generally came back successful. It was a pleasure to share those moments . I was lucky to have had him in my life. You will be missed Uncle Paul.

My happiest memories of Uncle Paul will be the family visits at my parents where he would frequently just drop in to say hi, something no one does anymore. He would usually end up staying for dinner and was so fun to talk to. His rapport was one of a kind and his laugh booming. I will remember listening and laughing to his stories from childhood to adulthood. He will be very missed.

It was a wonderful gift to be your eldest niece and I will greatly miss the annual Christmas eve phone call that’s been part of my holiday traditions since I was a little girl. Your smile, your laugh, and the fierce, emanating love you had for family near and far, is our greatest loss. ❤️

My grandpa, what a special guy. You consider yourself extremely lucky if you got the chance to know him. I’ll never forget his jokes and his beyond contagious laugh right after telling them. I’ll think of my grandpa every time I see carpentry work, thick plaid sweaters, vegetable gardens, and pickled carrots. I’m glad I got to grow up with such a Yukon grandpa, I’ll miss him and love him forever.
