(Stormin’) Norman David Karhut

Stormin’ Norman Karhut, as most people knew him, passed after a year and a half battle with cancer on November 22, 2024.

Norm was born in Vancouver, BC along with his brother James and his sister Teresa, both of whom proceed him. When he was eight, Norm moved to Whitehorse with his mother Doreen and his two siblings. While growing up you would find him playing soccer, or down at Rotary Park playing frisbee.

As an adult, Norm took joy in playing golf (disc or ball), either on the greens or virtually with his friends. He especially enjoyed teaching his niece Shantay when she was young out at Annie Lake.

In the summer, Norman frequented going up to one of his favorite places “Dodge”. He enjoyed the simple pace of Dawson City drinking a cold bud and meeting new people. When he could, he would go visit Salt Spring Island to visit friends and enjoy the warm weather and ocean breeze.

Most people who knew Norm, would say he was one of the first people they met moving to town and that he was a comedic fun guy who really liked having a good time, and showing people how to play foosball either at the bar or at a party. Though some would say Norm was difficult to be around at times. He was also very loyal, and you always knew where you stood with him. He will be very missed by the people who loved him.

Norm’s family would like to thank his friends who helped him out throughout the years, especially this last year. And would like to thank the nurses and staff at Wind River House for the care he received in his last few months.

There will be a Celebration of Life on June 20th, 2025 at the Kopper King Bar, and BBQ at his old trailer. Then his ashes will be scattered on June 21st in Dawson City. All who knew Norm are invited to come to either and to share their good spirits with a spirit. Contact his niece Shantay on Facebook or at skarhut@hotmail.com for more information.

That’s Norm alright. I met him through his buddy Dave McJannet. He would often come to Vancouver and hang out for a week. He sure impressed me with what an iPod could do.

    A story about Norm…
I was asked to give staff at Northwestel a short course on a new type of CRTC regulation that was being implemented by the company. This could not have been a more boring topic to speak about to 99.9999999% of the population. Norm and a few of his colleagues were in the very first course I taught. I knew Norm previously and his personality, and I remember Norm sitting with his arms folded and clearly looking like he was going to run and pull the fire alarm to get away from the torture. After a while I could see that Norm was understanding what was being shared and – with arms unfolded – started asking relevant questions and understanding the new challenges the company was about to face. After the course we spoke briefly and he was complimentary, and I could see that he was clearly thoughtful about what he had learned. I had no idea how the first course would be received, but to my surprise there were immediate requests for more courses for his colleagues. To this day I assume it was Norm – as an influencer – that spread the word that the course was not so bad. Subsequently, Norm always had a smile and acknowledged me somehow in spite of the fact that I was “big-bad-management”.

Norm “made my day” as I’m sure many others have experienced of him.

The world needs more people with character and curiosity like Norm. Norm is missed.

Norm and I were best of friends! We laughed and sang songs and had a lot of shared opinions on varied topics. I miss him in my life and hope he is resting in peace and out of his pain and suffering 🙏
