David Eric Godfrey

April 12, 1945 ~ March 18, 2025

David Eric Godfrey

David’s life began April 12, 1945 in Weston, Toronto Ontario as the elder son of Eric and Margaret Godfrey.  David and his brother Carl were avid hockey fans and enjoyed camping with the family.  David was a sports enthusiast, his favourite team being North Dakota State’s Bison football team. On March 18, 2025 David went to be with his Lord and Saviour.

David received a diploma through Red Deer College as Rehabilitation Practitioner on April 30, 1979 and, in the early 1980’s, an Early Childhood Development Diploma. Throughout the years he completed several distance education Bible courses.  Proof of David’s love of literature is substantiated by an inventory of 1,327 books.  The majority are Christian and the remainder non-fiction.

Accepting a supervisor position with the Sheltered Workshop (now know as Opportunities Yukon) brought David to the Yukon.  Creating Grey Mountain Wheelchairs, David identified and met a need of repairing and maintaining wheelchairs.

It was during this time that he met his wife Shari and they were married on October 2, 1987.  While working as a visitor receptionist at SS Klondike, David developed and conducted the Children’s Tour. Probably David’s most satisfying career was working in the Daycare.  How he enjoyed children.

Over the years, David volunteered his time in a variety of ways:

  • President of Whitehorse Drama Club
  • Served on Parks and Recreation Board
  • Lake Laberge Lions
  • Toastmasters
  • Red Cross
  • Special Olympic coach
  • As a member of North Light Church (YBF) David served as Elder/Deacon/ member of Council for many years, participated in church choir, part of worship team, taught Sunday School
  • Supported various missions and missionaries through the years

David is often described as a gentle and kind individual who revelled in other people’s strengths.  An example of his influence is illustrated in the report of one of his athletes has recently received the King Charles III Coronation Medal. For many of the years this young person participated in Yukon Special Olympics, David was guiding him on in his sports career.

Celebration of Life to be held Saturday April 12, 2025 at Bethany Church at 1 p.m.

A time of refreshments and fellowship to follow.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in memory of David to your favorite charity.

My condolences, Shari, in your loss of David. I smiled when I read about his large inventory of books. I, too, have a large stash of books. I met David shortly after I moved to the Yukon. He was working at a day care centre. David was such a kind and gentle soul. I never heard him raise his voice in anger or for any reason. A rare quality in a man, without a doubt.

My deepest sympathy Shari. I went to school with David at Humber Heights. We lost touch over the years, but I did get to meet him once again when I was visiting my brother David Nugent. We had a lovely visit reminiscing over our public school days. I met you, Sheri at this visit in your home. What a wonderful life he had and I do recall, David saying he was so happy to be living in the Yukon.
Be well all the best from Susan Nugent, Etobicoke Ontario.
